Pure. Raw. Honey. It’s been used for thousands of years to beautify the skin and treat a long list of skin conditions. Even wounds which are not healing respond to honey treatments in hospitals.

Honey used to mask, spot treat, and cleanse is a Nourishing Skin Care Tradition with a long list of benefits including reduced redness & inflammation, speed healing, hydrate, and soften the skin.

All skin types will benefit from incorporating any pure, raw honey. Sensitive, reactive skin, eczema, rosacea and acne all will respond well to honey treatments and using honey daily to wash your face! (That’s right - you can wash your face with honey - not only exceptionally nourishing for our skin, but a honey cleanse quickly resets optimal skin pH).

Any pure, raw honey will provide benefits. Infused medicinal varieties offer exceptional healing properties. Honey has been used for thousands of years to treat skin diseases, burns, and infections.

Honey was also renowned throughout history to brighten and beautify; Cleopatra bathed daily in milk and honey.

Today, we know why and how this practice works and what we can expect by incorporating washing and masking with pure honey on a regular basis.

For years, I’ve been creating custom, targeted, medicinal-infused honey cleansers and masks for clientele. Not too long ago, I began offering these 2 targeted blends in my boutique and here on my website.

HOW I CREATE THESE …

First, I gather healing herbs from the forests and from my garden. I include lavender and Marshmallow grown by a freind downhill from me.

Next, I slowly infuse raw honey from a small apiary on the western slope of Colorado with these healing plants.

Honey is a mild solvent; in time, the healing compounds present in the plants are imparted into the honey. Finally I strain and filter out the herbs.

Next, I blend the infused local, raw honey with 2 very special single-source honey varieties known for their medicinal value: Raw Manuka Honey and Raw Buckwheat Honey.

Both of these varieties of honey have anti-microbial profiles, which can help control the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. All skin types benefit from the inclusion of these particular honey varieties - those with inflammatory skin issues such as acne, rosacea, and eczema will get additional benefits.

Finally, I enhance the blended honey with essential oils and infused glycerites to create 2 targeted blends: Acne Support and Healthy Aging.

HOW TO INCORPORATE HONEY INTO YOUR ROUTINE

CLEANSE

  • Splash your face with warm water, never hot.

  • BLOT some of the water off so you are damp, not soaking wet.

  • Scoop out about 1 teaspoons of honey into your warm wet palms.

  • Rub them together for a few second - the honey will quickly dissolve. OR, alternatively, apply the honey directly to your damp skin.

  • Briskly “wash” your face like you would with any cleanser or soap! Then … let it soak in a few minutes while as you brush your teeth to allow time for the honey to work it’s magic.

  • Only splash to rinse, do not wipe or wash off. Resist the urge to wash the honey off. Leaving a few molecules behind - sure! Just not so much that when your face dries you feel sticky.

  • Pat dry. Go on to your next step: tone, moisturize etc.

MASK

#1 SIMPLE HONEY MASK:

Honey masks can be as simple as a applying a layer of pure, honey to warm, damp skin, massaging in for a moment as it dissolves. Let it soak in for about 5 - 30 minutes.

An optional step to increase hydration is to sprtiz steam distilled hydrosol water a few times during your mask and massage in for a moment.

Simply rinse well with warm water and rub your face with your hands to remove. Done.

#2 HONEY + LOTION MASK

My favorite facial mask is a DIY concoction I make with this honey mixed together with lotion. Combine your favorite facial lotion or cream about 1:1 with honey, apply to damp skin and let it soak in for 5-20 minutes. Remove by splashing with warm water. Any raw honey is suitable! I reach for my Acne Support Honey, since I occassionally break out, and combine it with my Dew Drops or Rain Drops for the lotion part. I wish I could convince the entire world how amazing this this DIY delight really is.

SPOT TREAT

Spot treating provides many beneficial compounds and space for the skin to heal more quickly without needing to do a complete mask.

For those with acne, faster healing reduces the chance of scarring.

There is ample evidence that treating inflamed areas with honey (especially medicinal Manuka, Kanuka, or buckwheat honey) soothes irritation, redness and swelling.

  • It is best to spot treat areas of your face when it’s clean and a little damp. So right after cleansing is a good time. Clean your face then pat dry.

  • Simply apply a small amount to the area with a clean finger.

  • Allow the honey to soak in for 20-30 minutes to get the most benefit - resist touching the area during and after the treatment.

  • Splash and wipe gently with a clean washcloth to remove the honey.

  • There might be a slight feeling of residue - that is normal and will quickly absorb.
